Tools of the Trade

So it has been a disgustingly long time since I posted last. I haven't done much art-art, I have some scans from my Moleskine that I put up on my Flicker that I will post here shortly.

Until I get to do that, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite art supplies, as well as offer links as to where to get them yourselves.

I have linked these products to their pages at dickblick.com. Other great shops that I frequent at include Utrecht and Jerry's Artarama. Prices may vary between retailers so shop around. Also check to see if any of these retailers are in your area!

Paper:
Moleskine Sketchbooks:
I love the Moleskine sketchbooks because they have a nice sleek apperance and are highly portable. They are great for pen and ink work, colored pencil and pencil. You can get these at most book stores as well as art stores.

I also use a variety of other sketchpads and watercolor paper packets. My favorite brands are Strathmore for watercolor paper, and Canson for sketch/ drawing paper.

Pens & Brushes:
Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
This is a Japanese pen. It, unlike most brush pens, features real nylon bristles that don't dull or fray. It has a nice ink flow and for the most part is waterproof. One of the things I like most about this, is that the ink is refillable.

Faber-Castell PITT artist pens:
The Faber-Castell PITT pens come in a variety of sizes and colors. I like to use the black superfine one. It has a nice line thickness and feel, and lays down a nice dark line of India ink. These come in a variety of sets, as well as open stock at most art stores.


Colored Pencils & Markers:
Prismacolor Colored Pencils:
Hands down, the best colored pencils around. Nice thick lead that is blendable and can be used with a wide variety of other products. These come in sets of various amounts, as well as an open stock.

Copic Sketch Markers:
Copics are a little more expensive than Prismacolor markers or other art/ design markers, but they seem to last longer, don't dry out as fast . I like these because they have a nice brush tip


Paints:
Windsor & Newton Cottman Watercolor Pans:
I bout a set of 24 full pans of these paints a while ago and love them. The colors are nice and vibrant, and are nicely transparent.


Erasers & Etc:
Magic Rub Peel-Off Eraser Pencil.
This is a great eraser for erasing in small areas, adding detail to pencil renderings, and as a general eraser.

I drew this after watching Mommie Dearest the other night. And I finished it up lastnight while watching a documentary-movie on John Lennon.

I still need to go in and use some acrylic paint to accent the buttons on her cuffs, as well as the WIRE HANGER!

Pen Pressure

Playing around again. All photoshop. I REALLY want the font Bookman Swash. It's a retro classic.

And I love drawing these fun ampersands.

Work In Progress.

A work in progress. I started this before work today, and I need to finish the penciling. I wanted her holding a wire hanger, but I think her hand is going to be on her hip instead.

If you can't tell, it's Joan Crawford. OR Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford from the movie Mommie Dearest.

I plan on inking it and then coloring it with watercolor. Very simple. Much like the flapper card, and my "Then and Now" illustrations.

Digital Sketch

I should start keeping my digital sketches. I usually just delete them or close with out saving. Shame.

Art Dump

Did some arting this weekend. I have 2 ATCs and 1 sketchbook spread to share today.

"Stock art website with stolen art suing original artist"

I found this on Digg, and felt that I have to repost it here. It's something that probably hits close to home for a lot of artists and graphic designers.

Have you ever created something, and put it on your website, or DeviantART account, or your Facebook for the world to see? Only to find that a week later it's reposted elsewhere with no credit back to you?

Now imagine you are a successful graphic designer and the many logos that you have created for established companies and corporations have been copied and posted else where. The kicker? A stock art site stole them, offer them to other people for a price, and then turn around and slap you with a lawsuit claiming that you, the artist, stole their work.

Well this is just the thing that happened to Jon Engle.

David Then & Now Color Version

As promised a color version of the Then and Now. I gave up doing it on the computer, so I painted it! I love watercolor! This little travel watercolor set I have is really nice. I thought it was going to be cheap and tacky, but I'm surprised. And the water brush is so fun to use! I have finally been able to paint something and have wet edges!

Need to do a new picture to night... hopefully I won't be too busy play the new game I got last night for my DS.

I drew these on watercolor paper in my moleskine with hopes to paint them. I plan on re-inking them in illustrator and coloring them in photoshop.


On the left we have me, crica 2000 I was 15, and me 9 years later in 2003 at 23. It's funny I drew the now last night, and then wound up wearing the same thing to work today. 0_0

Nerdsday Art

Went to the first ever Nerdsday with my friend Patrick of Visual Post fame. It was a twitter meet up... but more noses in laptops than handshaking.

I drew Patrick's drink. In the dark. Not too bad. I need to learn how to work with light and reflection and clear objects a bit more.
